Alcohol Prices Set to Rise as Bottle Production Costs Increase
Starting from the 1st of the month, beverage companies have announced significant price hikes across all alcoholic products due to rising production costs of bottles.
One company specializing in the production of empty bottles has revealed that costs for its products have surged. For instance, the price for a 750ml empty bottle has been increased to Rs. 160, while a 375ml bottle is now priced at Rs. 140, and the cost for a 180ml bottle has risen to Rs. 109, as reported by local beverage manufacturers.
This shift in pricing also affects deposit amounts charged by wine stores. The previously standard deposit of Rs. 60 for high-demand glass bottles is now set at Rs. 100. Similarly, deposit charges for half bottles have increased from Rs. 40 to Rs. 70, while the deposit for 180ml bottles has gone up from Rs. 20 to Rs. 30.
Beverage companies have indicated that the rise in the cost for bottles, which are not returned, has been added to the overall price of alcohol. This adjustment allows them to recover the additional financial burden incurred from purchasing new bottles.
As a result, companies are raising prices for alcohol to pass these increased costs onto consumers. The new pricing structure sets the cost of a 750ml glass bottle at up to Rs. 3,800, with Rs. 360 allocated for the retailer and approximately Rs. 611 collected in taxes.
Even though there have been no increases in alcohol tax rates, companies argue that the rise in production costs for empty bottles leaves them with no option but to charge consumers more for their products.
Following the economic crisis of 2022, alcohol prices in Sri Lanka have seen an increase of nearly 100 percent. With the anticipated rise in alcohol duties in 2024, businesses plan to hike prices by Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 across all alcohol categories. Furthermore, considering the rising fuel costs amidst ongoing regional conflicts, another price hike of about Rs. 20 is expected in January 2025.
In response to inquiries from the Department of Excise, a senior official confirmed that beverage companies had submitted their revised deposit lists correlating to increased production costs.
