Government Denies Any Intent to Censor Media or Public Opinion

The current government has no need to suppress media or public opinion, asserted Eranga Gunasekara, the Deputy Minister of Urban Development. He emphasized the importance of examining the existing Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the new legislative proposals presented by the government to tackle ongoing terrorism.

Gunasekara pointed out that these laws, including provisions aimed at preventing organized crime, are currently being challenged in the Supreme Court. He indicated that the government is prepared to engage in extensive discussions within Parliament to make any necessary amendments based on directions and recommendations from the judiciary.

Reiterating the government's commitment to stand with the people, the Deputy Minister stressed that there is no intention to impose restrictive measures on public opinion or media freedoms, a stance the government has effectively demonstrated in practice.

Furthermore, he highlighted that the right to critique is preserved for all parties. If any criticism incorporates democratic or progressive ideas and proposals, the governing party will not shy away from considering and acknowledging those suggestions, he added.
