Minister Dissects Development Challenges in Colombo Amidst Historic Governance
Reflecting on decades of administrative shortcomings, Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Rajapaksha, expressed that expecting significant development milestones within a mere two-year span under the current government is unreasonable. He highlighted past governments' failures to properly execute essential development initiatives over the last fifty years.
In a statement to the media, the minister pointed out the necessity of questioning the developmental record of political parties that have governed for 76 years. He assured that the government is actively taking steps to swiftly address existing issues and provide timely solutions.
Discussing the flooding challenges in Colombo, Rajapaksha clarified that the city's drainage and sewer systems were designed decades ago based on historical weather patterns. The recent persistent heavy rains, intensified by climate variability, have directly contributed to the current flooding situation, which is not unprecedented for the city.
When questioned by reporters about the timeline for resolving these issues, the minister suggested that inquiries should be directed to the Colombo Municipal Commissioner. He stressed that if city officials fail to meet public needs effectively, there will be no hesitation from the government to remove them from their positions, emphasizing accountability at all levels of civic administration.
