Legal Proceedings Continue Over Death of Kavantissa Elephant
The ongoing investigation into the death of a Kavantissa elephant has led the Galgamuwa Magistrate's Court to mandate the presence of the wildlife site officer representing the complainants on the 19th of this month. This directive was issued by Magistrate Ravindra Ranjan Bandara in light of the case pertaining to the incident.
In the courtroom, attorney Rohitha Rajakaruna emphasized the need to reconvene the proceedings concerning the elephant’s death. He highlighted that allegations directed towards officials from the Department of Wildlife Conservation concerning the incident were unfounded and unjust. He asserted that dedicated officers were performing their duties and that there existed public suspicions regarding the responsibilities of senior officials within the Department.
Rajakaruna stated that the case does not warrant the prosecution of all veterinarians associated with the Department of Wildlife and underscored that many veterinarians serve with commitment and compassion. He also mentioned the presence of veterinarians who had previously treated the elephant on video, arguing that a systematic investigation should be conducted regarding these assertions.
He called for the submission of the post-mortem report of the elephant to an independent panel of foreign veterinary experts, with the expectation that their findings would be presented to the court. Meanwhile, addressing the situation, attorney Upul Jayasuriya, representing photographer Pathum Bandara, disclosed that the elephant's remains have already been sent to the University of Peradeniya for further examination. He requested that the findings of this investigation also be forwarded to the court by the wildlife officials.
Taking into account the submissions made by the attorneys, Magistrate Bandara scheduled the wildlife site officer's compulsory appearance in court on November 19 to address the allegations and requests raised concerning the case.
Additionally, the hearing related to the shooting incident involving the Kavantissa elephant is set to resume on the 11th of this month at the Mahawa Magistrate's Court.
