MP Dayasiri Jayasekara Critiques Attendance at BIMSTEC Youth Summit

In a pointed critique during a parliamentary session, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara raised concerns about the representation of youth from Sri Lanka at the recently held BIMSTEC Youth Summit. He accused the government of sending personal secretaries of ministers as delegates instead of actual youth representatives, undermining the summit's purpose.

Jayasekara emphasized that while other member countries sent their designated youth representatives, Sri Lanka's delegation consisted primarily of personal aides and staff of ministers responsible for youth affairs and the digital economy. This, he argued, questions the country's commitment to empowering its young population.

"Despite having capable young brothers and sisters within the National Youth Services Council, not a single genuine youth representative from Sri Lanka was sent to the BIMSTEC summit. Instead, attendees included staff from the National People's Power party affiliated with ministers. This raises questions about the sincerity of efforts to bring real change to this country," he stated. "Historical precedents of such governmental decisions have led to public dissent.”

Jayasekara noted that the Mahara Youth Services Council has effectively transformed into a branch of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party, with the leadership of its chairman and directors taking on political educational sessions dubbed 'Panel Five.' He highlighted that the political maneuvering happening in Mahara is unprecedented, even during the establishment of the United National Party that envisioned the Council as a non-partisan institution for youth development.

The MP further expressed his alarm over the state of the National Youth Services Council, asserting its role in fostering skills and leadership among Sri Lankan youth should remain free of political biases. He criticized the current situation where the Council has seemingly become a center for promoting partisan political ideology.

In closing, he challenged the relevant minister to disclose the name of any true youth representative who officially attended the BIMSTEC summit, reinforcing his call for accountability regarding the youth representation on international platforms.
