Maha Viru Day Commemorations Planned Amidst Controversy in Northern Sri Lanka
As November 27 approaches, organizers are calling on all Tamil citizens in the North to join in the commemoration of Maha Viru Day, a significant event observed annually. This year, various student organizations from the University of Jaffna, along with several voluntary groups in the Northern province, are preparing to honor this solemn occasion.
In light of the upcoming observance, residents in the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi areas have been actively engaging in community clean-up efforts around designated memorial sites, making preparations to celebrate the day with respect and reverence. Grassroots initiatives have been organized to facilitate these activities.
Participants have been observed lighting lamps and lighting incense in tribute to the deceased, symbolically honoring those who have passed on. Maha Viru Day, celebrated annually by the people of the North and East, has long been declared a prohibited event by the government.
This year’s main memorial event will take place at a special Maha Viru monument located along the coastline in Mullaitivu, offering a poignant backdrop for the commemorations.
The preparation for the event has stirred considerable debate among members of the Jaffna Municipal Council. A sharp disagreement arose among several councillors, leading to a temporary suspension of council proceedings as they discussed the council's involvement in the event.
Four councillors have publicly expressed their dissenting views and exited the council session, specifically challenging the decision to relocate a statue of Thileepan prior to Maha Viru Day. Questions were raised about the council's actions regarding this statue, sparking a heated discussion among members.
The contentious atmosphere culminated in a flurry of emotions, as advocates and opponents alike voiced their perspectives, culminating in a tumultuous debate within the council.
Regardless of the disputes, the Jaffna Municipal Council has issued an external statement reaffirming the necessity of commemorating Maha Viru Day on November 27 in Jaffna.
