Colombo Faces Severe Flooding as Heavy Rains Disrupt Daily Life
In response to escalating public distress caused by continuous flooding in Colombo and surrounding areas, a special emergency meeting convened today under the leadership of the Colombo Mayor. The gathering aims to seek urgent and sustainable solutions to the ongoing crisis brought about by heavy rainfall.
Taking place at the Colombo Municipal Council auditorium, the meeting brought together key officials from various sectors, including urban engineering, the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, the Road Development Authority, the Disaster Management Centre, and police transportation departments.
Attention will focus on swiftly addressing blockages in the city’s primary drainage systems and ensuring immediate maintenance of crucial drainage channels and pumping stations. The session will also discuss the development of a coordinated emergency response mechanism that can effectively operate across institutions.
The urgency of this meeting follows a significant deluge yesterday afternoon, which severely disrupted daily activities throughout the city. Residents experienced widespread chaos as heavy downpours inundated Colombo.
During the torrential rainfall, key roads in Kollupitiya, Galle Road, Bambalapitiya, Boralesgamuwa, Maradana, Army Road, Thummulla, and the Municipal Council were submerged under water over a foot deep, creating severe traffic congestion that persisted for hours. Additionally, flooding rendered the railway signaling system between Colombo Fort and Maradana inoperative, leading to significant delays in all train services.
Among the most alarming reports came from Colombo’s National Hospital, the country's principal medical facility. Water overwhelming the hospital grounds affected its emergency unit and submerged the lower floor of the Bandaranaike building, causing serious disruptions to the treatment of critically ill patients due to disabled electrical systems.
