Central Bank Governor Stresses Importance of Consistent Economic Policies for National Well-Being
In a recent address, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, emphasized the critical need for consistent and robust monetary policies to ensure the overall economic well-being of the nation, irrespective of public sentiment. He cautioned that if such policies are not implemented due to popular dissent, the entire country would ultimately bear the repercussions of failure.
Speaking at the "Meaningful Money" national conference on financial literacy, organized for faculty and students at the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Weerasinghe addressed the complexities surrounding economic policies.
He highlighted that every economic policy, while benefiting certain segments of society, also introduces challenges for others. "Complaints that arise during the implementation of a policy often reveal that many individuals understand their personal gains or losses well, but have limited comprehension of the overarching benefits or drawbacks to the country as a whole," he pointed out.
Dr. Weerasinghe noted that a significant factor contributing to this misunderstanding is the inadequate communication to the public regarding the rationale behind the implementation of specific policies. "If the reasons for introducing a policy are not clearly articulated to the public, it becomes exceedingly difficult to execute these policies, potentially leading to protests that undermine their success," he added.
The Governor reinforced that essential policy decisions necessary for maintaining financial stability should be implemented without hesitation. He cited recent stringent monetary policies enacted by the Central Bank as a prime example of such necessary actions.
"If we recognize the need for specific financial policies, we must ensure their implementation. Neglecting such crucial policies due to public opinion will inevitably result in significant harm to the nation," he warned.

Today's inflation rate is close to almost 9%. But the interest rate you give us for our bank deposits is only about 7%. What is the point of savings money in bank? Do something about it such as raising the interest rate above inflation rate .
