Government Presents Rs. 47 Billion Supplementary Estimate Amid Rising Fuel Prices
In response to escalating global fuel prices driven by ongoing military tensions in the Middle East, the Sri Lankan government has submitted a supplementary estimate of Rs. 47 billion to Parliament today, aiming to alleviate the burden on consumers.
Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Anil Jayathissa Prasanna, emphasized that the government stands ready to provide further assistance should the crisis intensify. He presented the supplementary estimate during the parliamentary session, highlighting the urgent need to support the populace amid the current economic challenges.
Out of the total allocation, Rs. 41 billion has been earmarked specifically for the Ministry of Power and Energy, illustrating the government’s commitment to stabilizing fuel prices and mitigating the economic pressures facing consumers.
This allocation is primarily intended to ensure that fuel prices remain manageable for the public, thereby reducing the overall economic strain.
Additionally, the estimate includes Rs. 6 billion dedicated to the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Affairs to bolster existing programs that provide relief to the public and combat inflation, among other operational initiatives.
During the presentation, the Deputy Minister made it clear that these funds would not exceed the government's overall budgetary limits, emphasizing the importance of maintaining sound financial management within the approved expenditure framework.
He noted, "The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has directly impacted international energy markets. Our goal is to alleviate the burden on consumers here as much as possible. The government will not hesitate to take necessary actions to provide additional relief to the public if the situation in that region escalates further.”
