Sri Lankan Universities Face Decline in QS Asia Rankings for 2027
A recent report from the prestigious QS Quacquarelli Symonds has highlighted a concerning trend for Sri Lankan higher education institutions in the 2027 Asian University Rankings. The findings reveal a significant drop in the positions of the country's top universities over the past four years, as reported by Mirror Business.
For the fifth consecutive year, the University of Colombo has maintained its status as Sri Lanka's highest-ranked higher education institution. However, it has fallen sharply, dropping 46 places to land at 364th position compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, the University of Peradeniya and the Sri Jayewardenepura University have been ranked at 389th and 398th respectively. Although these three universities remain within the top 400 in Asia, they have all experienced notable declines in their rankings over the last four years.
In 2025, the University of Colombo was ranked 275th, indicating a staggering drop of 89 places since then.
Out of the 12 Sri Lankan universities included in the rankings, eight have reported declines this year, with only two institutions showing any progress.
In a positive note, Moratuwa University has advanced by 37 places to achieve the 517th spot, while the University of Kelaniya rose 44 places to rank 687th, showcasing the highest local growth among the universities.
The QS report indicates that while universities in other countries in the region continue to surge ahead, the overall score levels of Sri Lankan universities remain stagnant, which has been a crucial factor in their decline.
Particularly, indicators such as faculty reputation, the student-to-faculty ratio, and the percentage of PhD-holding faculty members have shown a considerable slump across all universities in Sri Lanka.
Despite a 6% increase in student enrollment at the University of Colombo, the faculty percentage has decreased by 3%. At the same time, the student-to-faculty ratio at the University of Jaffna has plummeted by 24%. QS data further reveals that Sri Lanka is lagging behind the regional averages in attracting international research and foreign faculty and students.
This year's top position in the Asian rankings is held by Hong Kong University, while India's IIT Delhi (66th), Pakistan's NUST University (76th), and Bangladesh's Dhaka University (136th) are well ahead of the University of Colombo.
