City Garbage Collector Receives Death Threats from Local Politicians
In a shocking incident in Nawalpitiya, a garbage truck driver named Manjula Bandara reported that he was threatened during his duties on the 5th of the month. The intimidation came from a group that included Sasanaka Sampath, a local organizer of the People’s Force, a member of the Pradeshiya Sabha of Pasbkage Korala, and a councilor from the Nawalpitiya Municipal Council.
According to Bandara, the group obstructed the operational garbage truck and emerged from a van, threatening him. One individual from the van reportedly pointed a gun at him, issuing death threats while also continuing to threaten him via phone after they had moved away from the scene towards the Jayathilaka Sports Complex.
Bandara explained that these threats stemmed from a past incident during the local elections when the organizer allegedly requested a bribe of 500,000 rupees in exchange for a bonus councilor seat on the Pradeshiya Sabha. Bandara was not willing to comply with this demand, which he believes led to the ongoing intimidation.
The threats surfaced following a drinking party that occurred after the opposition successfully defeated the budget proposal presented by the National People’s Force on that same day. This context adds to the already volatile political environment in the region, which has seen decreasing support for the ruling faction among local constituents.
Bandara raised concerns about the safety of citizens when armed individuals are allowed to roam the city unchecked, particularly noting the absence of the organizer from regular duties despite medical reports filed for the Nawalpitiya and Hatton constituencies. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice is served.
In response to the incident, K.M. Kulathunga, the Officer in Charge of the Nawalpitiya Police, confirmed that an investigation has been initiated, and he expressed hope for the law to be duly enforced in this case.
