Sri Lankan Government Rejects Claims of Targeting Protesters Amid Anti-Narcotics Initiatives
The Sri Lankan government has firmly denied any intentions of suppressing the public through the introduction of anti-protest legislation, asserting that current legal frameworks are focused on apprehending organized crime syndicates and drug traffickers. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Vijeepala, emphasized that the legislation aims to enhance law enforcement efforts against these illegal elements.
In remarks made to the media, the Minister highlighted that authorities have identified 48 major organized crime syndicates operating in the country. He emphasized that swift legal actions against these criminals and traffickers has become a top government priority.
Vijeepala dismissed allegations from opposition parties suggesting that the upcoming legal provisions would target trade union activities and student protests, asserting that the government is committed to ensuring no legislation would oppress legitimate public dissent. "Our government will not approve any law that subjects the populace to hardship. Activities by trade unions, student movements, political dissent, and public protests are entirely exempt from these new laws," he stated.
In response to concerns regarding potential legal challenges to the proposed legislation, he affirmed that the democratic space exists for any party to present their grievances before the Supreme Court. "However, some groups within the opposition are misinterpreting these laws to mislead the public," he pointed out.
The Minister also noted a growing trend of protests targeting the police by various factions, asserting that these demonstrations are often backed by networks of traffickers and criminals. He reiterated that the Police Department remains committed to upholding the rule of law, operating without influence from such protests.
