 ඉදිරි මාස කිහිපය තුළ ඇති විය හැකි එල් නිනෝ  කාලගුණික තත්ත්වය හමුවේ කෘෂිකාර්මික ක්ෂේත්‍රයට එල්ල විය හැකි බලපෑම් අවම කර ගැනීමට අවශ්‍ය සියලු පියවර ගෙන ඇති බව කෘෂිකර්ම අමාත්‍ය වසන්ත සමරසිංහ මහතා පවසයි.

ඉදිරි මාස දෙකහමාරක කාලය තුළ එල් නිනෝ තත්ත්වය වර්ධනය විය හැකි බවට ලැබී ඇති පුරෝකථන සැලකිල්ලට ගනිමින්, කෘෂිකර්ම දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව විකල්ප ක්‍රියාමාර්ග දෙකක් සඳහා සූදානම්ව සිටින බව අමාත්‍යවරයා මෙහිදී සඳහන් කළේය.

විශේෂයෙන්ම මෙම තත්ත්වයත් සමඟ වර්ෂාපතනය ඉහළ යාමේ ප්‍රවණතාවක් පවතින බැවින්, එමඟින් ලපටි ගොයමට සිදුවිය හැකි හානිය වළක්වා ගැනීම රජයේ මූලික අරමුණ වී තිබේ.

ඒ අනුව, මෙවර මහ කන්නයේ වගා කටයුතු ඔක්තෝබර් මස මුලදීම ආරම්භ කිරීමට තීරණය කර ඇත.

 "නොවැම්බර් මැද වන විට ගොයම් ගස යම් ප්‍රමාණයකට වර්ධනය වී තිබුණහොත්, අධික වර්ෂාවෙන් සිදුවන හානිය අවම කර ගත හැකියි. ඒ නිසා අපි මහ කන්නය කලින් ආරම්භ කිරීමට ගොවීන් දිරිමත් කරනවා," යැයි අමාත්‍යවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය.

රටේ ආහාර සුරක්ෂිතතාව තහවුරු කිරීම වෙනුවෙන් දැනටමත් ආනයනකරුවන් සහ අපනයනකරුවන් සමඟ සාකච්ඡා පවත්වා ඇති බවත්, වගාවට අවශ්‍ය පොහොර තොග ගෙන්වීමට කටයුතු කර ඇති බවත් ඔහු මෙහිදී අවධාරණය කළේය.

එසේම, එල් නිනෝ තත්ත්වය හේතුවෙන් ලෝකයේ අනෙකුත් රටවල නිෂ්පාදන ක්‍රියාවලියට සිදුවන බලපෑම පිළිබඳව ද අමාත්‍යාංශය අවධානයෙන් පසුවන බව අමාත්‍යවරයා සඳහන් කළේය.

ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ගොවියා ඉතා උනන්දුවෙන් වගා කටයුතුවල නිරත වන බවත්, වත්මන් යල කන්නයේ අස්වනු නෙළීම අගෝස්තු මස අවසන් වන විට නිම කිරීමට නියමිත බවත් පැවසූ අමාත්‍යවරයා, ඕනෑම කාලගුණික අභියෝගයක් හමුවේ කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය සුරැකීමට රජය කැපවී සිටින බව ද ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

Sri Lanka Prepares for Potential El Niño Impacts on Agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture is taking proactive measures to mitigate the potential impacts of the upcoming El Niño weather phenomenon on the agricultural sector, as emphasized by Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe. In a recent media briefing, he outlined the government's readiness to address these challenges.

With forecasts suggesting an intensification of the El Niño conditions over the next two months, the Agriculture Department is preparing alternative strategies to counter any adverse effects. The Minister noted that there is a noticeable trend of increased rainfall associated with such weather patterns, posing risks to paddy cultivation, which the government is keen to protect.

In light of this, preparations are underway to commence the main paddy planting season at the beginning of October. Samarasinghe stated, "If the paddy plants show considerable growth by mid-November, we can significantly reduce the damage from excessive rainfall. Therefore, we are encouraging farmers to start early."

The Minister also highlighted ongoing discussions with both importers and exporters to ensure the country's food security, emphasizing that arrangements are already in place to import essential fertilizers needed for cultivation.

Furthermore, the Ministry is closely monitoring the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon on agricultural production processes in other countries. Samarasinghe remarked that Sri Lankan farmers are highly engaged in their cultivation activities, with the current harvest in the Yala season expected to conclude by the end of August. He reassured that the government is committed to safeguarding the agricultural sector against any climatic disruptions.
