පසුගිය පැය 24 තුළ දිවයිනේ ප්‍රදේශ කිහිපයකට ඇද හැලුණු අධික වර්ෂාව හේතුවෙන් මහවැලි, කැලණි සහ කළු යන ප්‍රධාන ගංගාවල ජල මට්ටම ඉහළ ගොස් ඇති බව වාරිමාර්ග දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව පවසයි.

කෙසේ වෙතත්, මෙම තත්ත්වය මීට පෙර අත්විඳි 'දිත්වා' කුණාටුව හා සබැඳි දරුණු ගංවතුර තත්ත්වය තරම් බරපතල නොවන බව එම දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව අවධාරණය කරයි.

වාරිමාර්ග අධ්‍යක්ෂ (ජල විද්‍යා හා ආපදා කළමනාකරණ) ඉංජිනේරු එල්.එස්. සූරිය බණ්ඩාර මහතා අද (03) සඳහන් කළේ, මහවැලි ගඟේ ඉහළ පෝෂක ප්‍රදේශ වන නාවලපිටිය, වටවල සහ නානුඔය යන ප්‍රදේශවලට මිලිමීටර් 200 ඉක්මවූ වර්ෂාපතනයක් ලැබී ඇති බවයි.

මේ හේතුවෙන් නාවලපිටිය සහ පේරාදෙණිය අතර ගඟ ආසන්නයේ වෙසෙන ජනතාවට ගංවතුර අවදානමක් පිළිබඳව දැනුවත් කර ඇති අතර, මේ වන විට නාවලපිටිය ප්‍රදේශයේ ජල මට්ටම ක්‍රමයෙන් අඩුවෙමින් පවතින බව ද ඔහු පැවසීය.

කැලණි ගඟේ ඉහළ ධාරා ප්‍රදේශ වන ලක්ෂපාන, නෝර්වුඩ් සහ කිතුල්ගල යන ප්‍රදේශවලට ද මිලිමීටර් 100ත් 150ත් අතර වර්ෂාපතනයක් ලැබී ඇති අතර, මේ නිසා හංවැල්ල, අවිස්සාවේල්ල සහ කිතුල්ගල අතර පහත් බිම්වල සුළු ගංවතුර තත්ත්වයක් ඇතිවීමේ අවදානමක් පවතී. කළු ගඟේ රත්නපුර ඉහළ ප්‍රදේශවලට ද මිලිමීටර් 100ක පමණ වර්ෂාපතනයක් ලැබීම නිසා ජල මට්ටම අවදානම් මට්ටම දක්වා ඉහළ ගොස් තිබේ.

ඇතැම් ස්ථානවලට පැයකට මිලිමීටර් 70 ඉක්මවූ තද වැසි ලැබීම නිසා ජල මට්ටම ක්ෂණිකව ඉහළ ගිය ද, මෙය මීට පෙර අත්විඳි 'දිත්වා' අවස්ථාව තරම් මහා පරිමාණ ගංවතුර තත්ත්වයක් නොවන බව ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

නිල්වලා, ගිං ගඟ සහ මඩකලපුව ප්‍රදේශවලට ද සැලකිය යුතු වර්ෂාපතනයක් ලැබී ඇතත්, ඉන් විශාල ගංවතුර තත්ත්වයක් අපේක්ෂා නොකරන බව වාරිමාර්ග දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව පවසයි.

අද දිනයේ ද වර්ෂාව අපේක්ෂා කරන බැවින්, මාර්ග භාවිතා කරන්නන් සහ පහත් බිම්වල වෙසෙන ජනතාව ක්ෂණිකව ජල මට්ටම ඉහළ යාම පිළිබඳව දැඩි අවධානයෙන් පසුවිය යුතු බව වාරිමාර්ග අධ්‍යක්ෂවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් අවධාරණය කළේය.

Heavy Rainfall Reports Lead to Rising Water Levels in Major Rivers

In the past 24 hours, heavy rain in several regions of the country has caused significant increases in the water levels of the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Kalu rivers, as reported by the Department of Irrigation.

However, officials noted that the current situation is not as severe as the 'Dithwa' floods experienced previously. The department emphasized that the risk of severe flooding has been deemed comparatively low.

Engineer L.S. Suriyabandara, Director of Water Resources and Disaster Management, revealed today that rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters has been recorded in high-risk catchment areas, particularly in Naula, Watwala, and Nanuoya.

This rainfall has prompted officials to alert residents living near the riverbanks between Naula and Peradeniya about potential flooding risks, although water levels in the Naula region are reportedly decreasing gradually.

Similarly, the upper flow areas of the Kelani River, including Lakshapana, Norwood, and Kitulgala, have also witnessed rainfall between 100 to 150 millimeters. As a result, there is a potential risk of minor flooding in low-lying areas between Hangwella, Avissawella, and Kitulgala.

In Ratnapura, heavy rainfall of around 100 millimeters has been reported in the higher regions of the Kalu River, leading water levels to rise to alarming levels.

Despite instances of intense rainfall exceeding 70 millimeters in some areas, leading to temporary spikes in water levels, officials clarified that the situation does not equate to the massive flooding experienced during 'Dithwa.'

While significant rainfall has also affected the Nilwala, Gin, and Madakelaka areas, the Department of Irrigation has assured that expectations of a major flood are low.

Looking ahead, with more rain expected today, the Director has urged road users and residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant regarding potential increases in water levels.
