Disappearance of Sri Lanka's Iconic Tusker 'Mahasen' Raises Alarm

The notable tusker known as 'Mahasen', considered the largest of Sri Lanka's wild elephants, has reportedly gone missing, as disclosed by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa during a parliamentary session.

Mahasen, who roamed the Madurankuliya area as his primary territory, previously traversed protected forest zones including Ritigala, Kanthale, Kaudulla, Minneriya, and Somawathiya. Premadasa elaborated on the tusker's extensive habitat during his address to Parliament.

He highlighted the fact that Mahasen possessed a strikingly large tusk quite bigger than that of the recently deceased tusker of Kavantisssa. Expressing profound concern over the lack of information regarding the disappearance of such a valuable national heritage animal, Premadasa emphasized the severity of the situation.

Furthermore, he pointed out the urgent need for a swift plan to safeguard the remaining limited population of elephants in Sri Lanka from poachers and human activities.

As part of these efforts, he called on the government to establish a comprehensive security and surveillance system in regions where elephants reside, leveraging full cooperation from the Civil Defence Force, the Special Task Force, and the tri-forces.
