Government Plans to Expand Tax Net Instead of Increasing Tax Burden on Citizens
In a significant shift in tax policy, a senior government official has announced plans to broaden the tax base rather than impose new tax burdens on the public in the upcoming fiscal year. This initiative aims to implement a special program to identify individuals evading tax payments.
The official highlighted that urgent actions will be taken to recover outstanding taxes from those who have previously evaded payment, as well as to engage a substantial number of new taxpayers in the tax system throughout the year.
By the end of this fiscal year, it is estimated that the total amount of outstanding taxes in the country will reach approximately 175 billion rupees. The Department of Inland Revenue is prepared to undertake all necessary legal and investigative actions to expedite the collection of these funds.
Additionally, General Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Rukdevi Pranandhu, indicated that the department is actively working to track down tax evaders by scrutinizing economic activities and personal asset declarations. This effort aims to secure the expected tax revenue for the government.
She further noted that the current number of registered taxpayers, around 1.3 million, is targeted to expand to 1.5 million by the end of the upcoming year.
Moreover, the General Commissioner emphasized that individuals who have yet to submit their income tax returns for this year will have a grace period. If payments are completed by December 2, they can avoid the associated penalties.
